Janelle's Bio
Janelle Hail, founder, president and CEO of National Breast Cancer Foundation, knows first hand the importance associated with early detection of breast cancer.
In 1980 she was diagnosed with the life-threatening disease of breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy. Surviving breast cancer through early detection ignited a passion in her to devote her life to educate women about early detection and provide free mammograms for women who could not afford them.
Eleven years later Janelle turned her personal tragedy into a triumph. She created National Breast Cancer Foundation in 1991 and has since led her highly successful nonprofit foundation to touch the lives of millions of women nationwide.
From 1996 to 2000, she was a member of the National Speakers Association, the largest professional speakers association in the world. During that time Janelle held the position of North Texas Chapter President and was named Member of the Year.
In 1999, Janelle's moving story of her turning point experience with breast cancer was published in The Zig Ziglar Difference, a remarkable book filled with inspirational stories about individuals whose lives were touched by motivational speaker Zig Ziglar.
The California State Senate granted Janelle the 2001 Recognition Award for improving the quality of life for all the women of California by providing free mammography services for needy women.
From 2001 to 2004 she was named a "War on Cancer Champion" by the American-Italian Cancer Foundation for the Free Mobile Mammography Program that NBCF provided in the Greater New York City area.
In 2005, the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, honored Janelle with the "Tour of Hope" award for gracious support of breast cancer research. That same year, St. Vincent Hospital Foundation in Indianapolis, Ind., named her a member of The Seton Society and a philanthropic award recipient for assisting women with free mammograms. Also, the Little Rock, Ark., Baptist Health Foundation granted her a Circle of Excellence philanthropy award for helping women with free mammograms who could not afford them.
Janelle accepted the 2006 Foundation of the Year award on behalf of the National Breast Cancer Foundation from White Memorial Medical Center, Los Angeles, Calif., for her generous provision of free mammograms for underserved women. Later that year, Belo Broadcasting and Cadillac named Janelle a Texas Living Legend for her outstanding philanthropic work.
Most recently, the City of New York and the American-Italian Cancer Foundation honored Janelle with a 2007 Proclamation from the City of New York for her contribution toward saving lives in New York through funding the Free Mobile Mammography Program. The City of Los Angeles also gave her a 2007 Proclamation for her service to the people of Los Angeles.
Janelle's talents as a professional speaker and award-winner writer take her across the nation and around the world speaking to associations and corporations where she inspires women with her message of hope. Janelle shares that early detection is the key to success - self exams and mammograms are a must. She demonstrates that while breast cancer changes lives, these changes can become empowering.
Janelle's gentle heart, mixed with her entrepreneurial leadership, places her on the cutting edge of her industry. She provides advice and helpful information, as well as hope to assist individuals touched by breast cancer regain some control and lead a fulfilling life. Janelle gives back the gift of life through sharing the importance of early detection, providing education awareness of breast cancer and funding for free screenings to low-income and underserved women.
Janelle has been married to her husband, Neal, for more than 40 years and is the mother of three sons and the grandmother of three young children.
