There’s a Winner in All of Us-Part 1 of 5

What it Takes to be a Winner

One of the most popular TV shows, Deal or No Deal, is not only a game of chance at winning $1,000,000, but also a study in human behavior. On February 13th, Katie Henslin, from Forest Lake, Minnesota, walked away with $449,000 and exemplified what it takes to be a winner.

During the month of March, we are going to explore the qualities of a winner. Let’s take a look at Katie and see why she has a winning spirit.

At the beginning of the Million Dollar Mission game on Deal or No Deal, host Howie Mandel asked her why she thought she was a winner. She momentarily looked surprised that he would ask, then answered, “Because I was bred from a long line of winners.”

From her answer, it was evident to me that she knew how to play the game of life. Here are the qualities of a winner that she exemplified during the time she played:

  • Have a Winning Attitude

From her early response to Howie, I don’t think it ever occurred to her that she was less than a winner. Many come onto the show and boast about how they are going to win, but there was more to her than a flighty hurrah. She demonstrated that her winning attitude was a part of her life.

  • Position Yourself to be a Winner

Katie did not sit around wishing she had some money. She explored the impossible with a real avenue of getting to her dream. Katie positioned herself as a winner by getting in front of the pot of gold and working her opportunity.

  • Look Beyond Yourself

The end of the game arrived with two remaining cases to open. Katie had to make a decision about whether to accept the banker’s offer of $449,000 or go for the million. This was her response as she held her baby girl in her arms, “I still believe the million dollars is in this case, but for her I cannot risk it.” She put her family ahead of foolishness. She said, “If I leave with $449,000, I do not see how that would be losing.” That’s what made her a winner. Her decisions were not based on impulse or greed, but clear-thinking reasoning.

  • Know When to Walk Away

Winners do not always have the biggest prize in hand, but they do know when to walk away. She didn’t throw everything into the game to ultimately lose it all. She reasoned within herself and looked at walking away as the best pathway to opportunity.
