What is NBCF?
National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) extends women's lives through education about breast cancer and early detection. The organization provides hope to women and families affected by breast cancer through a community of caring support and encouragement that enables those diagnosed with breast cancer to have fulfilling lives during their treatment and after.
When was NBCF founded?
NBCF was incorporated in the State of Texas as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation and granted tax exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service in 1991.
Who founded NBCF?
Eleven years after being diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer, Janelle Hail decided to devote her life to educating women about early detection and raising funds to provide free mammograms for women who otherwise could not afford this diagnostic procedure. Janelle founded National Breast Cancer Foundation in 1991 and began the journey that would lead her highly successful nonprofit foundation to touch the lives of millions of women nationwide.
What is NBCF's Mission?
To save lives by increasing awareness of breast cancer through education and by providing mammograms for women in need. Janelle saw an overwhelming need for education surrounding the issues related to breast cancer. Many women do not follow the simple techniques of breast self-examination and regularly scheduled mammograms. She discovered an unmet need for assistance to underserved women in receiving breast care information and free mammograms.
Where does NBCF Operate?
NBCF is headquartered in Frisco, Texas, just north of Dallas, and provides funding to programs throughout the United States and internationally.
How is NBCF Different from Most Cancer Organizations?
NBCF focuses on extending women's lives through education about breast cancer and early detection. By providing funding for educational programs and mammograms, NBCF helps save the lives of thousands of uninsured women by reaching them at a vulnerable time in their lives and ensuring their good breast healthcare. The Foundation also contributes a portion of its income to research.
What are the Principal Activities Provided by NBCF?

Education:
Beyond the Shock®, the more than an hour-long presentation, was produced by NBCF and created for people diagnosed with breast cancer. It is now available in English, Spanish and Chinese. It utilizes rich media and 3D graphics to simplify complex medical information in an engaging virtual tour of the body. "Beyond the Shock" can be accessed in a variety of formats: through an interactive presentation online, as a video presentation streamed through YouTube.com, in a downloadable format of either the entire program or by chapters or to be purchased as a DVD.
