Another Record-Breaking Year! Radio Listeners Click 8-Million Times to Fund Free Mammograms
DALLAS, October 2006. Thousands of radio listeners from across the country showed their determination in the fight against breast cancer and made this year's Pink Ribbon Challenge® the most successful ever. 144 stations nation-wide were directly involved, promoting the Challenge on-air and with links on their web sites. Lisa Halstead, COO of The Breast Cancer Site, estimates this year's Challenge will fund 1,000 mammograms. its most-successful ever!
"The support of our station partners and their listeners was overwhelming," said Janelle Hail, a breast cancer survivor and founder of the National Breast Cancer Foundation. "Their efforts will fund potentially life-saving mammograms for hundreds of women who otherwise would not be able to afford them."
The Pink Ribbon Challenge® is unlike any other fundraising effort. Listeners participate by visiting their favorite radio station's web site each day during October and clicking on the Pink Ribbon banner. That sends them to The Breast Cancer Site where another click on the "Fund Free Mammograms" button translates into monetary contributions from corporate sponsors. The money raised is distributed by the National Breast Cancer Foundation to hospitals, clinics, missions and mobile mammography units coast to coast.
Again this year KBIG in Los Angeles led the way, generating a record number 140,636 clicks at The Breast Cancer Site. "104.3 KBIG was once again happy to support the Pink Ribbon Challenge. Our online Loyalty Program was the perfect match for this campaign. Members were encouraged to click on the banner each day during the month of October. Over 7,000 members did so daily. Not only did they receive credits, but they helped fund mammograms and the message of Breast Cancer Awareness was reinforced," said Sharon Klein, Web and Promotions Coordinator for the station.
KBIG was one of 144 radio stations to pledge their support to this year's Challenge. They were joined by broadcasting heavyweight TM Century, who through direct mail encouraged their clients to download and air celebrity-voiced public service announcements from their own web site. Syndicated shows Crook & Chase, Bob & Sherri, Chick Chat, Jim Brickman, Young & Verna and Ben & Brian also lent their support.
Noted celebrities such as Heart's Ann and Nancy Wilson, Anne Cochran, Martina McBride, Amy Grant, Lee Ann Womack, Donny Osmond and others also took part and helped generate excitement by voicing public service announcements urging listeners to take the Challenge. Some even included links to The Breast Cancer Site and the NBCF site on their own home pages.
This year's Challenge also featured the first Hispanic station and a Spanish Pink Ribbon link graphic on the station's home page. In addition, KLTY, the nation's top-rated Christian station, participated for the first time, as did a number of other Christian stations across the country.
The National Breast Cancer Foundation sends its heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in this year's effort including its radio and broadcast partners; the dozens of celebrities who lent their time and talent; The Breast Cancer Site, and most especially, the thousands of loyal listeners who "clicked for the cause."
