Core Biopsy

by Momtothree on 5/24/2008 at 10:32 pmin category Early Detection
Hello,

I'm scheduled for a core biopsy on Thursday morning at 7:30am. Can you tell me what to expect? Will I be able to work after? Do they give you any meds? I'm very nervous.

should I have someone else take me? They didnt tell me what to expect, just to dress comfortably.

thanks in adavance.
Julie

You can drive yourself, they will numb the site with some lodocaine befor procedure, a core needle is just a larger bore needle(bigger hole) it is usually hooked up to suction , they find the suspicious atra via ultrasound and remove a portion of the mass using the suction. mine was qiuck painless and I was able to conrinue with my day as plannned. they will appply a pressure dressing afterward, the longer you leave it on the less bruising you will have. You should have your results in 3 working days, which means you get to feel panicked all`weekend, Dont do that`to yourself, have some fun, spend time with your family and make sure you ask questions during your biopsy, they should b able to identify the size, shape, and distributions of the calcifications they are investigating. Take care, thinking of you.. Tabi

Hi, Julie.
I had a core biopsy in January '08. Yeah, it's weird how they don't give you much info as to what to expect when you make the appointment...I had the same (frustrating!) experience. Anyway, I went alone (didn't need a driver), and the whole thing was done in a few minutes. The surgeon numbed the area first with an injectable anesthetic. That was like your usual numbing medicine...hurts some when it first goes in, but goes away pretty quickly...may make your eyes water a tiny bit or grit your teeth. Then he went in with a larger needle to draw out the tissue for the biopsy. I can't say any part of that hurt, but it did feel a little weird and definitely creepy at times. I went home with a tiny band-aid on it, and when I took it off, I was a little bruised in the immediate area. The bruise was a little bigger by the next morning, and even though it wasn't a bad bruise or very big, it was a little disconcerting seeing a bruise on my boob...a little like I'd been beaten up. But, it did go away completely in few days. I didn't need any meds and was back into my routine immdiately afterward. As far as dressing comfortably, I would just make sure you wear a comfortable bra in case you're at all tender (which I doubt). Nervousnes is normal, but try not to let it get the best of you. This procedure is definitely not a big deal...or at least it wasn't for me. Hope that helps!!! Best of luck to you. I'll be keeping you in my prayers.
