Found a lump, need help

by SingleMomma on 6/4/2008 at 12:54 amin category Early Detection
Hi all. I just found this site in my search for information. Pull up a chair, grab a snack, this post is going to be a long one. I am 24 (turning 25 in a few weeks), and about a week ago I found a lump in my right breast. I went to my general doc, who felt it as well. She is having me get an ultrasound, which I believe is done for women my age because of tissue density or something, instead of a mammogram. However, the radiology place can't give me an appointment until June 24th, which stinks. My Dr, during the visit, said that the lump was hard, had no defined borders (no definite shape), and did not move. It is not painful at all. I also have no nipple discharge at all. It is located, if looking at my breast from the view of someone standing in front of me, immediately to the right of the nipple on my right breast, no lumps under/near my underarm. As a side note, I have a son, whom I did breastfeed, but he is almost 4 now, so I stopped breastfeeding years ago. There is some "unusualness" to the skin on top of where the lump is located, but I don't know if it is just the leftover goodness of having your B-cup breasts become giant D-cups during pregnancy and then sadly deflating. I have been unhappy with the look of my breasts since having my son, so I have no idea if these marks are leftover stretchmarks or something, since I was not into spending too much time looking at them. The only instances of cancer in my family are my grandmother (nonsmoker) recently passed away from lung cancer, and my cousin (same side of family) had a large benign brain tumor removed about 3 years ago. I'm not sure what I'm looking for by posting this, maybe just some advice. I am finding conflicting info online, and though I know that obviously no one here can diagnose me, if anyone has any thoughts on my situation I would appreciate it. I am terrified, and so upset that I have to wait 3 weeks to even have the ultrasound. I know the odds of it being cancer are relatively small, but it is still frightening. I am so sorry for this novel of a post, I just don't know where else to turn. I'm a single working mom in college, so I don't have many friends, certainly non that have dealt with this before. If you got through all of this, thank you so much. (And if you didn't, and skipped to the end, I don't blame you ;) )

Oh, and this is posted twice, for some reason it also posted into the "Tell Your Story" board, and I have no idea why. I swear I didn't do it!

It is frightening! But, chances are better of it being a cyst. Although, that is what they told me.
Definintly get in asap!

Those marks are stretch marks, same thing happened to me.

Good luck & let us know how you are doing.

Praying for you in Alaska ~ Sherry

Thank you so much for your replies! I will get on the cancellation list, I didn't even think of that! Unfortunately I have crappy health insurance, and the only other covered radiology place is about an hour and a half away. Thanks for the tips!

God Bless!!!!!!!!! You are soooo young. Merrie is right....a lump doen't mean cancer...heck...I didn't even have a lump that could be felt...mamo and ultrasound found it. I also agree with Merrie....call and get on the cancellation list. The waiting and not knowing is the most stressful part of it all. You are doing the right thing by getting info and asking questions. Chances are it is just changes in your breast from child birth...and sister......as bad as we hate it....getting a little older is a bitch as well....You just stay strong and call that doc back.....this is your life.....bj

Waiting for information unfortunately is standard and I know it is very stressful. But stay calm a lump doesn't always mean cancer. I would suggest you call your primary doctor back and let them know that the first appointment you could get is June 24th and could he/she suggest another ultrasound location. If that doesn't work call the ultrasound place and ask if they could put you on a cancellation waiting list. Some offices don't have a waiting list but you could still call every morning and ask about cancellations. Wish you the best.
