Need some pre-surgery info please...

by Barb50 on 6/24/2008 at 1:15 pmin category General
I've been trying to find out what to expect for a time line for all these tests to the surgery date. I'm really frustrated by the delays altho they may all be normal. Can anyone tell me what their experiences have been with this? This is my experience so far, I was diagnosed (needle biopsy) on May 28th and my surgeon sent me for an MRI on both breasts. This was done on June 4th and got the results on June 9th with another diagnosis of "multi-cinetric disease" and a recommendation for a MRI assisted biopsy on the other breast. Had that done June 18th and still waiting for the results of that. I did get to see the plastic surgeon already which is good. But at this point I don't know if I need just the mastectomy on the right breast or if both will be involved and I'm not sure if I'll have to wait another month to even have the surgery!!

Well, here's an update. Good news - the other biopsy came back negative BUT I have increased risk in that breast. First decided to have the bi-lateral done but ended up seeing a different plastic surgeon because the first one didn't have any availability until Sept!! The other plastic surg (saw yesterday 7/1) said to me if I were his wife he would recommend just having the one done and deal with that. Less time in surgery, better recovery, etc. Decided to go that route. BUT my surgery is now scheduled for 7/28!! I'm not happy about the delay but I guess I have no choice. Hopefully the cancer is not in my lymph nodes yet. Have an appt at Dana Faber for a second opinion on July 10th. I really am confused!

This is what I am going through as well except my right breast MRI state there is no cancer and my Dr says if I was his wife or sister he would tell them to go ahead and remove it too just in case...I m not so sure!!!!!

The waiting nearly made me nuts, but what to you and me are "delays" are just part of the normal procedure as far as the docs and hospitals are concerned, and your timeline sounds like it's moving along fairly well. Take the time in between appointments and procedures to research, but try not to jump to any conclusions about your diagnosis until you've been given concrete results. BTW, be sure to get copies of all of your reports so you can ask about anything you're unsure about. Best of luck to you! You've come to the right place to share, vent, ask questions, etc. :)

There are alot of different varieties of cancer.

The actual diagnosis is going to tell the story.

I'm sorry for the waiting.

Please keep us posted.

Hey Barb...welcome to the sisterhood that we would rather avoid. I'm glad you found us. The waiting is the worst, but at the same time it will seem like you are going in supersonic mode. Take this time to get as much information that you can. Get yourself educated enough to ask questions.....and be sure to take notes. First, did they tell you from your first biopsy what type of cancer, or anything like that? Second, before you start diagnosing yourself, get the results of the second biopsy. You will find alot of help on this site. Do not be afraid to ask, ask, ask, and then ask some more. Stay positive and put your fighting mitts on.....I'll be right with you...keep us informed. bj
