$$$$$$ problems...need help....insurance depleted!!!

by BJ SPEED on 7/8/2008 at 10:53 amin category General
Hey guys....
I just found out that my maximum has been met with my insurance....and not everything has been filed yet. I found out just a minute ago that I owe my radiologist $22,000.00 and my last three weeks have not even been filed yet.

I owe the hospital $7,000.00. Not sure about my oncologist or my surgeon, but we are speculating that I already owe over $30,000.00 out of my own pocket. Of course they say I can pay $100.00 per month.....that will be good....in about 25 years I will be done!!!! It just keeps getting better.

Anyone know any place to get some help? My ignorance at not knowing my benefits, but we are self employed and our insurance is sucky. I already had a $5,000.00 deductable that we have already paid. This is just July and I still have appointments and MRI's and mammograms and junk to do, and now they are talking about taking out my ovary.

What happened to all the money that I have donated throughout the years for breast cancer stuff? All the charities that I have done and participated in and all the pink ribbon stuff I have bought......Does any of that help?

Sorry to be such a downer, but this has really kicked my tail.......

Hi BJ,
Try caring4cancer.com. They have a breast cancer section, under that is financial support, maybe they can help. I know my friend also gets some financial help from the ACS for her medications. My husband works in the billing field and has currently been working on getting us some financial help, if I find out anything else i will let you know ASAP. Good luck and we are praying for you. I know financial worries are the very last thing you need right now, if I can help you in any way please just let me know.

Hi BJ! I can relate so well to you on this. We too are self employed - but weren't smart enough to have any insurance back up.
Talk to your hospitals business office and let them know your situation. My hospital here in Fairbanks is writing off all of my hospital expenses. Unfortunatly, those seem to be the cheapest of the bills. But, every bit helps. I still have the surgeon bill or bills - not sure since there were 2. I have not seen his bill yet and there is fear in my soul. Also the anethstesiologist...Patholgy consultants. MD's. I know I'm leaving people out here, lol.
I am paying the radiology consultants $25.month, I am trying to keep up with the oncology Dr bills as they come. So many things they could just tell you over the phone...yesterday they made me go in to see my Onco score. They could have just told me and saved gas & Dr. bill. Those are the frustrating things. I didn't need an appt. for that!!
So, I know where you are coing from. I too was disgusted with the "charitable' organizations. I went on their websites looking for help & all I could find was a place to make donations. Not sure what they do with all of the donations, but I couldn't find a way to get any help from them.
I have thought about bankruptcy, but, I hear that doesn't help with medical bills, lol.

So, you & I will be making a lot of payments for what may be the rest of our lives. How ironic.
Good luck to you, I pray that you will find some help. Talk to your Docs about it, there seems to be a lot of compassion from most of the people I have dealt with.

Your not being a downer - just real : ) Hang in there!! ~Sherry

I am not sure if you have tried this or mentioned this yet, but some times the Red Cross will help in some situations. Also, your local missions affiliated with churches might also help. Check with some of your hospitals around the area for charities that regularly donate to them. If you find charities that donate to the hospital you are at, they might be able help you in your situation. Not 100%% sure but worth a try.

Ugh!!! That sooooo sucks. I don't really have anything else to offer other than a sympathetic ear. Marti's suggestions sound good...and maybe try your local American Cancer Society...they may be able to point you in the right direction??? Even though I've had great insurance coverage, when the bills started coming in, I was like, "Shouldn't someone be paying ME for having to go through all of this???" It truly did feel like someone had kicked me while I was down, so no apologies needed from you, girlfriend!

Oh BJ , that really sucks! I would call any organization connected with breast cancer to see if financial help is available. Also , relay for life, they always have a sign about helping people with cancer. Hopefully, the oraganizations you call can refer you to help if they cannot assist you. It seems a damn shame that people cannot be allowed to just focus on getting well and not have to worry about financial concerns. If people get help who do not have insurance, can't the same help be extended when your insurance is used up? My best wishes to you but I do realize wishes do not pay bills. Also, maybe your Church or other organizations where you live could hold some kind of fund raising. Not that you really want to make everyone aware of what is going on. Keep taking care of yourself.
