I had a small lumpectomy on May 9. I have very large pendulous breasts, and my radiologist strongly suggested a reduction/lift prior to radition. My plastic surgeon has cancelled and rescheduled surgery and now I am looking at not starting radiation until post-lumpectomy 4 months. Should I change plastics to get the surgery done so I can start radiation? My lumpectomy was 5/9 and my plastic is now rescheduling for 8/5, which means I will start radiation in mid-September after a May lumpectomy.

My biopsy was done April 9th. The plan was that I would get radiation following this surgery. The plastic surgeon said that I would have better results and less complications if I had surgery before radiation. The reason is that radiation will damage breast tissue, make it firm and not plyable and may effect breast size. My original dx indicated a slow growing IDC. However my surgery reveiled a positive lymph node and additional findings of DCIS, so I will be having chemo instead and may face radiation down the road. So I understand your concern about the wait for radiation. I suppose the question for you is "Do you have an early stage slow growing cancer? and will you be comfortable waiting till August for radiation? If you have more concerns or questions, I would be happy to share more of my experience. Basically Surgery time should be about 4 hours. I stayed over night in hospital and slept upright for the first week, was able to shower by 3rd day and emptied drains 2 times daily. Hope this helps you. Hugs Merrie
