Newly Diagnosed

by Tami from PA on 7/13/2008 at 7:16 pmin category General
My name is Tami and I just turned 43 on July 3rd and was then diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer in the right breast. Tomorrow i meet with a team of doctors who will tell me what the best course of action will be. My surgeon, an oncologist and a medical radiologist--every Monday Geisinger Medical Center has a clinic that newly diagnosed can meet all the doctors, ask questions and begin planning treatment. I had my routine chest X-Ray and bloodwork done and everything came back normal. My surgeon told me that this was not a medical emergency. He said I could take care of this now or months from now.....does that mean it is slow growing? I have researched the different ways they look at cell behavior after biopsy and how it is graded as far as how aggressive the cancer is...but I still feel like tomorrow is not soon enough for it to come out. On my birthday, I had 7 biopsies done. Five were core and two were needle, one of the needles was a lymph node on the left side and the other was the spot near calcifications on the right. All was found to be benign except this mass near the calcifications on the right. He said it is 9mm big and shows no signs of having spread....but I am still scared. My father died from cancer that began in his prostate and rapidly spread to his bones, organs, everywhere....Gail, his nurse told me that comparing myself to my dad is like comparing apples to oranges....and that my bloodwork (CBC) results do not vary one way or the other by even one-tenth. The only test that was not back was whether or not it is hormone fed----I have been on birth control for as long as I can remeber, first to make my periods regular and then for the normal reasons as well, but when I turned 35, I went on the depoprovera shot. I have been on this for the last 8 years, so I have not gotten my period for the last eight years either. No one told me I needed a break----I'm wondering if I did this to myself...through my own ignorance. Is it better or worse if it hormone - fed?

I read one place that there are about 9 different kinds of Breast Cancer, each needing its own customised treatment plan.
Sounds like you are in the right place.

Please think through before deciding Lumpectomy vs Mastectomy. With that many biopsies needed, Your peace of mind and your chances for reoccurance will be different depending on this choice. Look for thread "Anita". And research it. Ask what is best for you. Decide on Your best treatment plan. Doctors usually let the woman decide rather than sway her in one direction or the other.

Birth Control pills and DepoProvera are on the Long List of risk factors.
I have no risk factors from that list. I have Breast Cancer.
My mother had every risk factor except a family member( well except me, I'm first ever on both sides of the family). She is 74 and no Breast Cancer.
Go figure. It is what it is.

Kaylyn 48 and premenopausal, DCIS Highest Grade 3 with comedo necrosis and Multifocal.Found in two quadrants. 6.5 x 6.5 x 3.5 cm, ER+ PR+. This is actually the most easily treatable one, especially compared to the IDC, ILC, and Triple Negitives. Bigger doesn't always mean badder.

Good Luck and keep us posted.

Don't try to second guess why this happened to you. There is just no rhyme to reason. From what I understand, the less periods you have the lower your risk. So, I doubt that was it. It sounds like you have a great team working for you! Good luck & prayers to you : )

I was on birth control pills for 10 years before being diagnosed, I'm glad to know that stopping the pill and taking control of this is possible. There's nothing saying that the pill does this to you, so second guessing myself at this point is doing more harm than good. I'm trying to focus on getting better and not knocking myself for decisions made 10 years ago. Try to stay positive!

I was happy when they told me i was estrogen + that ment they new what the cancer was feeding off of so the course of action is not to give it anything to feed off of so a cell can not grow, diagnosed june 2007 ..i did chemo surgery full mast. and then chemo 33 raditations and now on tamoxifen...it is a pill that tricks the body to think there is estrogen when there is not so if there is a cell floatinga around it will try to feed but it cant love and support Wanda

Tami,
Good luck with your meeting tomorrow, take a deep breath and hear what the doctors are telling you. Try not to hear what head says. I had a right mastectomy on 6/9/08 with tram flap reconstruction at same time. I was ER + so I was placed on tamoxifen, so far so good. Remember you are not in this alone, we have been where you are. Keep a good attitude.

I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

The "advantage" to the cancer being hormone positive is that you may be able to take tamoxifen as a "preventative." (hormone blocker)

People with ER+ cancers tend to have better prognosis.

I wouldn't "count on" deprovera as the "cause" of your breast cancer. The causes of breast cancer are very mysterious and variable.

I've never taken the pill...and yet, WA LAH! (It happens.)

Tammi, I really don't think anyone can tell you if any way is worse or not. The course of treatment you are about to go through is general for fighting the death of cells which is called cancer. Whether or not the Depo Provera caused this is unknown. The reasons why really can't be determined. What you can positively do is meet with your support team, doctors and technicians, to determine the best course of action that you can live with. Ask questions, ask questions and then ask questions. If you think of something before you see a doctor write the questions down. Make sure someone takes out the time to explain things to you and don't let them leave out the side effects of the medications you will take. Don't give time or effort to the how did I get this questions. Focus on the how do I get rid of it and live.
