On, March 7, 2007, I went in for a routine mammogram. (Having myself, nor my doctor detecting anything out of the ordinary upon examinations.) A few days later, I received a call from the Diagnostic Clinic that the would like to do any additional mammogram and ultrasound on my left breast. A few days later I went in and after the ultrasound the doctor said that there was a "suspicous" area of calcification on my left upper quadrant and suggested he do a needle biopsy. I agreed. Early the next week, I received word that it was "strongly" suggested that I contact my surgeon about having an "excision" of the calcificated area. I agreed and on April 26, 2007, I had a needle loch, then excision of the areas. I received word 3 days later from my surgeon that he would like me to come into the office and go over the findings. Well, he wouldn't say anything over the phone (I now know why), as it was cancer, Tubular Carcinoma and the "good" news was that the tumor was quite small (1.2 cm). He then wanted to do a Sentinel Node biopsy. I agreed. Boy, now that was an experience. Not so much the biopsy itself (as I was out!!), but, the insertion of the isotopes into the breast, ouch!
The good news was that my Sentinel Node was clear! However, in going of my course of action with my Oncologist, I have opted for the chemo (starting July 10, 2007) and then the radation treatments. Doing both, will at least give me the peace of mind, "that I have done everything that I can possibly do to lower my chances of recurrence".
I have great days, good days and weepy days. I'm not going to fool anyone, it is a scary thing! But, I have the most amazing support group in my family and friends, that I don't even feel that I need to go outside for support. Actually, one of my best friends is a Breast Cancer Survivor and has been going on 28 years!!!!
