Finally a plan for treatment and surgery

by Jackie T on 3/20/2008 at 11:05 pm in Treatment
This has been a long haul for me and I am thankful for the wonderful support I have received from my family, friends, and coworkers.

I am also very fortunate to have a great Care Team who have come up with a treatment and surgical procedure for a cure rate of 97%% for me.

Since I have tested positive for the BRCA2 cancer mutation gene, and based on an independent review of my pathology slides, and MRI results my Care Team has recommended six chemo treatments in 3 week intervals starting Monday, March 24. After my chemo treatments (approx. 4 months) a bi-lateral mastectomy with breast reconstruction will be scheduled. Down the road I will also have my ovaries and fallopian tubes removed.

I have met with my plastic surgeon (http://www.charlottalavia.com/index.cfm), she specializes in breast cancer reconstruction and is an experienced surgeon in microvascular surgery. She has recommended two procedures for me. The balloon expander with an implant or the flap reconstruction using the abdomen tissue (T-Flap). The tissue remains attached to its original site, retaining its blood supply. I am going to research both procedures because they have different risks associated with them. I will post a discussion on this site so I can get more information from other woman who have had these procedures.

I will meet with my plastic surgeon again to discuss the procedure I prefer and schedule the surgery.

I am also now on my way to the end to talk of reconstruction i have been here now for almost 10 mo. Most of all the ladies i have talked to were not happy with the abdomen one i know from what i have heard im going the expander. Although i am a 38d they will have to make the other one smaller but that is ok what a way to get perky boobs to go through hell for them :) 17 chemo treatments and surgery here and im a survivor love and support almost done thank god Wanda

Dear Jackie....seems like you really did a great job researching your options. That is so important! I just had a bilateral mastectomy on the 26th of February after doing 8 treatments of chemo. It was a very hard decision, but I feel the right one for me. I chose not to have reconstruction at this time.....I have to have radiation for six weeks once I am healed. I'm sure you will be just find. This is a great site to be on for questions you need answered but especially all the love and support you need from woman who have gone through the same thing. We are all in this together! Lots of Luck to you....my thoughts are with you!!

Hi Jackie,
I am amazed how much information you are able to remember and re-tell. It's been very informative. Please keep adding news. I wish you a very Happy Easter with your family and beautiful daughter! We are going to be able to remember all your milestones, because they seem to fall around special days. That is a great cure rate. I'll be thinking about you on Monday. Take care. Love, Marianne
