Why do people ask?

by angelique on 8/29/2007 at 3:27 pmin category General
Since I was diagnosed the most common question I got is how did you get that? To myself I would think duh! I am somewhat of a smartmouth and so is my husband. We got to the point of telling them oh we had bad fruit or we bought it at walmart or we would say well no one else in the family wanted it so I took it. Does everyone get questions like this? I mean the obvious answer to that question is genetic makeup. Some times I think people are just dumb. I also get tired of how are you honey you should take it easy. I can't take it easy or I will shrivel and die. Why do people think that because you have cancer you can't do anything?

In general, I hate people. At least stupid ones and they certainly come out of the woodwork, don't they!? My wonderful surgical oncologist warned me: "people will say stupid things to you. When they do, just say, 'I am sure you have no idea how insensitive [or ignorant] that sounded', and walk away. They surely won't be dumb enough to follow you and say something ELSE stupid". Although I have not been asked "how did you get that?" I have been asked (and this is REALLY asinine) "so how long did they give you?". I want to say "it's 2007. Have you noticed?" or "it's not that kind of cancer". I want to ask them "if 1 in 8 gets breast cancer, and I'm the one, what kind do you think YOU will get? Or are you in the next set of 8?" but I don't...I just think it real loud in my head. I love your replies, Angelique. Hope it's OK with you if I borrow them for the next person who asks something dumb. Good luck to you and God Bless.

Ignorance is bliss, isn't it? I have not had that question asked of me yet, but if I ever do, I'm going to use your response, that's great. I wonder what is worse, asking that question or just staring? I have discovered through this experience, that most people are just ignorant. It always amazes me when people just stare. I've looked at someone who is looking at me, I look away, then look back at them and they are still staring at me! The best is when someone points out to their friend that ther is a bald girl with a scarf (and three heads apparently) walking by them. I have actally starred back at people or said hi to people when they do that. I think I get angry instead of sad, because if I got said I'd be crying all the time!

My thoughts exactly! I have found through my continued cancer journey, that people of clueless on what they say. They would be much better of NOT saying anything. I usually want to say something that will put them in their place, but try to remember, they don't get it and move on. I don't want to waste more energy thinking how stupid they are....Yes I agree as well on the "rest" - First, I don't want to rest, that only gives me more time to think of my situation and 2nd, I want my life to go on as normal as possible, and resting for me is not normal. I've learned to "listen" to my body and try to comply but for taking it easy, no thanks! Take care- and ignore the ones you should, Lori
