Mastectomy Recovery, Drains

by A&R'sMommy on 4/18/2008 at 10:58 amin category Tell Your Story
I saw my breast surgeon on Monday and we didn't get clear margins on the last attempt at lumpectomy (DCIS, right breast), so it looks like I'll be going with a right mastectomy w/tissue expanders for reconstruction. I had a consult with the plastic surgeon yesterday, and I was totally freaked out about the idea of the drains. I had no idea I wouldn't be able to shower for 2-4 weeks and that even brushing my teeth would be challenging (pain wise)! Not to mention the fact that I have two little boys, 2 years old and 4 months old, so caring for them is a huge concern. Can anyone tell me what those first couple/few weeks after mastectomy were like, and specifically how they coped with the drains and personal hygiene? All the PS said was, "Well, you'll get very creative." What is THAT supposed to mean??? Bless you all who have been through this part of the process already and can help me by sharing your experiences.

i had a bilateral masectomy....2 weeks post op tommorrow and my surgeons secratary just told me to go online and see how others are dealing with their drains...i called today and told her i was removing them myself...which i did not do...but i really want to shower so i am excited to see others have....you should find ou how long they are going to leave the tubing...im 5'3 and all 4 of my drains touch the floor...i cant brush my teeth buts thats more from a complication...i have a huge swollen soar from the surgery...sleeping is difficult for me and i feel the drains limit my range of motion and they are healing so there is alot of throbbing around the holes and stiches...i find that the polysporin and saline soaked gauze is the only thing that brings some releif to the area...i have tons of babywipes for when i start to feel smelly, however i am seriously gonna shower in a few minutes i think that will give me some peice of mind...i have been able to drive short distances and go out and do things...i feel winded quick and the nice weather does not help....today i tried to carry a laundry basket and that did not work so well for me....but laying down i find it easiest to move around....and easiest to put arms over my head...

Thank you all so much for your feedback. It has helped tremendously! Well, I'm 5 days post-op and, since I'm wrapped "halter style", I'm obviously not able to shower...except for the lower half, which is fine with the hand-held. My husband is washing my hair in the kitchen sink which turned out to be an easier task than I'd imagined (I don't have the range of motion just yet to do it myself). I guess my PS prefers to keep his patients wrapped for a week or two (I go back today for a post-op visit and fresh bandages -- whew!), which I'm surprisingly comfortable with. Live and learn, huh? :D

Judy,

i agree with the other women. i had a double mastectomy with latissimal flaps and expanders. i was showering without any problem. i did get a shower chair and it helped when i wasn't feeling all that strong. just try to raise your arms as much as you can to stretch them so that it isn't as hard later. i bought this great tank top from soft-tee (i am sure that they have these tops at some of the specialty stores for breast cancer) and it has pockets for the drains. they are inconvenient, but that is about it. i also took saftey pins and pinned them to my shirts. sleeping was a problem for me and i found that if your prop up pillows at an angle you can get some comfort. i wish that i had asked about the after surgery experience. most of the time it is just uncomfortable. i am on week 3 and have 2 out of my 4 drains still in. they are small drains called jackson pratt drains and have a collection bulb at the end that is about the size of your fist. i hope that all goes well with you and best of luck. i am here for you if i can help you with anything else.

Oh my goodness! You have your hands full! The drains are NO fun that is a fact. NOT showering for 2-4 weeks? Who told you that? My drains came out at 2 weeks exactly but I showered after 4 days! I used a hand held shower head so I had control over where the water went...helped a lot. We used BIG sealing sports bandages to cover the drains at the point of entry into the skin....to keep dirty water out..worked fine. I think they will always tell you the worst case scenario......but they are right about being creative! Washing my mop of hair was my worst fear! Took 2 of us at first as you can't reach the top of your head! Needless to say we showered the entire bathroom between the 3 of us!!! TRY to see the humor, and take care! This is one amazing journey!!

I don't know why your doctor told you what he did. I had double mastectomy, drains 21 days...I had a shower 24 hours after and every day since. You can shower, brush your teeth, etc. You will have discomfort until your train comes out...but you will live on and heal. Don't worry about pain, it goes away and you will find a way to get dressed, eat and cope with everyday life, including holding your loved ones, including children....Shower.....I can't tell you how many showers I took the first week...But it was at least twice a day...drains in. Wear easy hospital gowns or blouses till the drains come out....easy to get on, but you will be fine. Trust me.
I will pray for you.

judy,
i had my mastectomy last friday the drain is in place but the amount of fluid is reducing daily. i am wearing jeans and just tuck the gernade like thing that the fluid drains in in my jeans pocket. as far as pain the first day i brushed my teeth it did hurt them i decided to use my wrist not my whole arm. the pain now is not hardly noticeable. i have numbness in my arm and the place where the drain is inserted feels kind of like its being pulled sometimes but othe than that i feel great. i have invasive ductive carcinoma nottingham 2 and don't have a clue what that means. i just figure i will try and research it and follow the oncologists advice when i see him next wednesday. good luck if i can be of any help let me know,

I used what you probably already have in your home. Baby wipes. They feel so soft and I found a wipe at the pharmacy put out by Medline with Aloe. They are 9" X 13" and called Skin Protectant Cleansing Wipes.

I didn't find the drains to be nearly as bad as I imagined they would be. I had a cami with pouch/pocket for the bulbs. I foud just having them in a T shirt tucked into elastic wasted pants worked great. I just sponged until I started showering (within a few days of surgery). I did not have expanders to deal with though. I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not. I was encouraged to use my arm (for toothbrushing, etc.). Sending Love and Luck to you. ~Robin

Judy, the drains concerned me too...but it is not that bad. I was able to shower after a couple of days.....or after we removed the bandages...but I chose to take a bath with my husbands assistance...I was scared of falling. I generally wore pajama pants with elastic and put the "bulbs" in the elastic. Check on "JodeeBra" web...they have a bra that has pouches made in the for the drainage tube. You will definately need some help with your recovery especially with having a toddler and baby. Take care and God Bless you and your family. Let us know when the surgery will be and know that you will be being prayed for.......Hang in there!!!!!!!!!!!
