Tamoxifen and Melatonin

by A&R'sMommy on 6/17/2008 at 12:24 pmin category Treatment
Hi there...me again with Q's about Tamoxifen.

I saw my oncologist last week, and as expected, he's prescribed 5 years of Tamoxifen therapy for me. He pretty much told me (in not so many words) that I can expect the hot flashes and night sweats to start within the first week. Oh, joy. I'm hoping I'll be one of the lucky ones who doesn't have it so bad, and I'm just waiting for my period to start before I start on it -- may sound silly, but I figure if it's going to interfere even the slightest with my cycle, I may as well know how it's interfering so I can report back to my doc if need be.

In the meantime, I'm trying to do a little research on how to possibly outsmart some of the side effects. One of you mentioned your doc suggested a low-dose aspirin to possibly curb the increased risk of blood clots, and I think someone mentioned melatonin. I'd be interested to hear more about this if you have more details.

Also, I was just reading on-line about melatonin possibly working in conjunction with Tamoxifen (and possibly, even by itself) to starve ER+ BC cells. Has anyone heard of this and/or discussed it with their oncologist? I was pretty surprised to see this...was really only hoping to find that melatonin was safe to use to help with the side effects. If it does double-duty, very cool!

Thanks loads for any info you can share. Hugs to all!!!

Judy

I am having a double Mastectomy next Thur (age 47)I am told I will have to be on Tamoxifen for about 5 years 1 pill a day. I am pre menopausal but I have gone through night sweats and flashes and missed periods. I have thought about having my ovaries removed to stop the esterogen. Any comments about the side affects of Tamoxifen in causing cancer of the uterus lining? Not sure I want to have another cancer on top of this one. Any suggestions?

I am 6mos into taking Tamoxifen and yes the hot flashes/night sweats are real! The night sweats come and go but the hot flashes are now a part of my dailey life. Mornings are the worse....My doc suggested decreasing caffeine intake and to take 800-1000mg of Vit E every day. Said she has gotten word from patients that it does help but it takes awhile to kick in, still waiting.......My chemo put me into menopause and my period probably won't every come back - so double hot flashes for me!!!!!Take care, Lori

Hi Judy - I have been on Tamoxifan since January and kept waiting for the horrible hot flashes to hit. So far so good. I have been really lucky and I would say that really just my overall temp is a tiny bit warmer but I was a bit cold natured to start with. I thought this summer (I live in Georgia) I would really notice but not yet. My doctors recommend exercise to prevent blood clots. I get up every weekday morning at 6:15 and walk with a neighbor (so I don't blow it off). Believe me I would rather sleep in but I know that I have to keep moving to stay healthy. Good luck to you and be well. Julie
