First Day after

on 6/21/2007 at 6:38 pm in Tell Your Story
Today I met with my oncologist post surgery, bilateral mastectomy with DIEP reconstruction, to discuss the pathology and determine next steps. The Ca is ER-, PR(borderline) and HER2 +. It is the HER2+ that means I will have to take Chemo again and Herceptin after that for probably a year. It seemed this took my oncologist a bit by surprise; he just did not think chemo would be necessary this time. I could tell he was uncomfortable with the diagnosis and telling us what is next. My husband was a bit numb and missed some of the details John shared.
I am grateful to have my husband, family and friends to be with me through all this. I also know that God is with me and will be my source of comfort and peace. I don't look forward to telling my sons, my youngest was here when I got home so it was natural to share with him and my mom but it is hard to tell my oldest son. He has been through this with me when he was 14 and has memories that I am sure he would rather not revisit.
I am tired so this will have to suffice for my first journal entry.

I am thankful that you have a family of supporters around you. I am sure it was really tough to tell your sons. I wish you luck in your journey.
