ONCOTYPE DX Test Results

by BJ SPEED on 3/20/2008 at 5:32 pmin category Treatment
Has anyone had the Oncotype DX test done? My results came back today with a score of 20. My onco recommends chemo, hormone tx, and rads. I feel that my score is on the low end and he is being too aggressive.....anyone got any ideas? Please help. I would like to avoid chemo if possible. Thanks.

Oh and also I am ER+, PR+, HER- and there was no node involvement- those things were considered also...

Hi BJ- my score was also a 20, but my dr did not recommend chemo once all the other factors of my case played in. I had a bilateral mastectomy, my tumor was stage 2 but only grade 1, and my type of bc (ILC) doesn't respond as well to chemo as IDC anyway. Onc said chemo would only decrease my chances of recurrence 1-2%% more than taking just Tamoxifen for 5yrs, and she and her 8 colleagues agreed I should not do it. I feel good about it, but it is a really tough choice! Our cases are all so different. Maybe pursue a second opinion of you're still unsure? I hope you can make a decision that gives you peace!

Falling into the intermediate category is like falling into the unknown. Researchers are now performing clinical trials to try and figure out the best way to go with the category.
When we have a patient that falls into the intermediate category, we look at the total picture. (How big was the tumor, were lymph nodes involved, what is your age, what are your other prognostic factors)
These things will determine whether or not the oncologist will go ahead and recommend chemo.
Remember, these physicians are telling you what they recommend based on past studies...
YOU have to take that information into consideration and see if these treatments are right for you.
Good luck!

I have had this test done. There is a great deal of information availble online WebMX has some of the best. The fact sheet t http://ecog.dfci.harvard.edu/general/gendocs/tailorx_oncodxfact.pdf is also very good. Your score is in the intermediate risk category so really the decision is yours regarding how much risk you are willing to accept versus the benefit from chemo it is difficult. My score is 16 and I am making the same decision myself.

bj- i am going for the test next week. I did it backwards! I already had chemo, rads, ect.
What I read on the test , a score of 17 and below was ok, not ruling out reccurance. So your score of 20 may be going the aggresive route as needed.
Let us know what you decide.
Love and support...

Hi BJ.....This discussion caught my attention because my surgeon said the oncologist would be ordering this test done. I just had my lumpectomy done last friday, so I am still awaiting my results. I will try to remember to post back on this when I find out my score. I know how you feel, I am hoping not to have to do chemo either....but I am getting the feeling that they may be very aggressive with my treatment.
