When do the side affects of Tamoxifin begin.

by BJ SPEED on 4/7/2008 at 5:02 pmin category Treatment
I start on my Tamoxifin tommorrow and was just wondering what to expect. I have read all about the side effects such as hot flashes, mood swings, weight gain....etc...(sounds like a ton of fun). Do these symptoms last througout the entire 5 years or do they go away. Thanks.

I've been taking my Tamoxifen for a little over three weeks. I too have already begun experiencing hot flashes. I also have been getting headaches which is a side effect as well. I hope at some point these will go away, the doctor prescribed something for now, if that doesn't work, I will have to look at possible surgery and remove my ovaries (bummer). No period yet, my doctor said that might happen. I take my pill in the evening. I find I have less hot flashes during the day when I do this. Everyone's different. Certainly don't mean to scare anyone. Best of Luck! Kel

I am on tamoxifen and its 20mgs every day. One pill a day. I have never felt any side effects from this drug. Oh I have hot flashes but I have had those since chemo and they are no worse nor better so I don't think my pill is causing that. I too have to take this for five years too. I take mine in the morning but in the hospital they would only give it to me at night, they said it was to keep my stomach from getting upset but I have an iron stomach apparently cause I get up and take it before eating. I hope this helps you a little bit.

I have been on Tamox for almost 3 years now and just recently I have felt the hot flashes returning. Up until then didn't notice any unusual side effects. Course the appetite has not diminished any - but am maintaining.

Would like to ask a favor of everyone - found out Monday the cat-scan show a "suspicious" area in my spine, so more tests have been ordered - just asking for a few good wishes, or prayers. Thanks

Thanks for all your answers. You guys all take it in the morning? I am having to take it twice a day. Is that normal?

I've been on Tamox for 8wks and am doing great right now. I did go through some awful side effects when I had a period about 3 weeks ago (not sleeping, hot flashes at night that left me soaked), but I made some simple changes and am pretty much symptom free today (hope it lasts!). I'm not sure what actually helped, but I took suggestions from other survivors and something worked! I now take my Tamox in the morning and also take 6mg Melatonin before bed. I'm also trying to excercise daily (just to break a bit of a sweat) and have cut out artificial sweeteners. If you end up with side effects, you might want to try these simple things to see if they help- I feel SO much better. I was ready to throw that Tamox out the window! Good luck and be sure to turn to other survivors if you have any problems on it... they have better ideas than our drs sometimes!

2 weeks for me....I think it helped my hot flashes (I was on a lot of hormones before the b.c. and they took me off cold turkey) Leg pain...I do feel some, but the doctor said to look for thrombosis...I figured it was becuase I was up and about more and on the treadmill...I could have strained a muscle.
My doc suggested....Take right after a light breakfast and a large full glass of water. I do, everyday and except having to go to the bathroom for an hour....I don't feel anything as of yet.
Good Luck...

I have been on Tamoxifin 4 months now with no side effects except for loss of appetite the first few weeks. Thats a good thing I guess! I have read some complaints of leg pain and hot flashes from other women. I do take tylenol pm to sleep so maybe I sleep throught the hot flashes. Keep a journal if you have any problems and talk it over with your oncologist when you go.
Love and support...
