Possible BRCA and DCIS at 40??AUGGHH!!

by Debb on 2/17/2008 at 4:18 pmin category Tell Your Story
Hi everyone. I'm new and I'm hoping you all will help me. I'm 40 years old and I was just diagnosed with DCIS. I had two lumps removed on Jan 25th. What they thought were common cyst turned out to be a tumor and an atypical ductal carsonoma in situ high risk lesion.
Since I'm only 40 and premenopausal my doctor is sending me to an oncologist. The thing I was most scared about is the fact that I don't know my family history on either side of the family. All I have is one sister. She doesn't know our family history either and I knew she had colon cancer a few years ago so I decided to look into the BRCA testing for gene mutation because I have two girls 17 and 19. My sister told me a couple nights ago that since I decided to go ahead with the test she would share the fact that she had ovarian cancer at the age of 28 and had the test done already. She is Brca 1 positive.
I'm confused and overwhelmed in so many ways right now. My oncology appointment is a month away and I have so many questions now. Like the medicine they want to put me on Tamoxifen could cause endometrial cancer and I have had problems with endometriosis and had to have a uterine ablation in 2004. Will this medicine bring that issue back? Since I can't have children and kept the ovaries for estrogen and now thats not good should I have the ovaries removed to prevent ovarian cancer?
Thanks for listening and I hope someone will respond with any thoughts, good bad or ugly. I just need to know someone knows what I'm going through.

Hi Adriana, I appreciate your reaching out to me and I also am sorry you are going through this ordeal. I took the brca test today and can expect the result in a month or so. Until then I'm going to work and hope for the best. I also had an mri today and with being closterphopic I was a train wreck and incredibly sore afterwards. Decided not to do that ever again. My decision to have more proactive treatment will depend on my BRCA results. If they come back positive I may reach out to you for more guidance if that is okay with you. What you are going through is very scary for me but helpful to know. I wish you well in you recovery and thanks for your support.

Hi Debb, Sorry to hear about your news, but I completely understand. I was diagnosed at 37yrs old. I tested positive for the BRCA1 and will have my ovaries removed in April. I recently had my bi-lateral masectomy and I am recovering from that. I wish you the best of luck, and we are all here in support.
