Rejection of reconstruction

I'm now trying this site in hopes that someone will respond. Thank you.

This is my first time on this link. 7 years ago a very small lump was discovered in my left breast. I had a lumpectomy, lymp nodes removed and radiation. I had a very difficult time with the radiation as I kept burning so it was stretched out to 7 weeks. 4 1/2 year later another growth was discovered. Again very early. I was not ready to be aggressive so a partial was done. This Dec, another growth was there. I knew I had no options left so I agreed to remove the left breast and the right one so long as reconstruction could start immediately. We were doing an expander with saline input until it reached a good size, however the left one started reacting and finally rejected what was being done. I had surgery this Monday to remove what was in place and am now told it will need 6 months to heal and them MAYBE we can try again, perhaps something different. The clean healthy right breast is doing fine. I can't get over the fact that Radiation which helps at first can become such a horrible influence for reconstructive surgery. I'm terribly uset because the last thing I wanted was a flat breast and having to use a prostesis may be what I actually end up with. Plus although I know that the right breast had become vulnerable I feel so bad that I invaded a perfectly healthy breast. I knw that's dumb and that I am doing preventive stategy but still. . . I am so angry about the effects of Radiation. Is there anyone out there who can relate r share with me?

I had the same thing happen to me. I did not go for the expanders. Because I had small kids at the time, but I did have reconstruction right after. And my radiated breast rejected my implant. So 2 months later after the had given me a pick line and all they had to move a part of my back to my breast and use part of the old inplant. I had to keep the pick line for 6 months and give my self meds to keep the infection away. They told me sometime radiation does that. That was in 2000. I hope all goea well for you. But do not let them rush you. Because you will end up with something you do not like or sick all the time like me. I was in and out of the Hospt. alot after that. I seemed to catch everything. All because I wanted a breast. And not I look back and thing why? I was young and thought that was very good to have. But take your time and heal. It will be worth it in the end - they never gave me a one way or the other it was here is what we are doing. Good luck!

Ev...you may be a good candidate for non-implant based reconstruction.

To be honest, after double radiation, I'm surprised that the plastic surgeon recommended implants.

There are a variety of choices.

(I think you need a second opinion from a microsurgeon...usually University hospitals are a good place to start.)

Reconstruction failures are very upsetting.

I KNOW. Been there.

I can share my moms' experience...she gave up her right breast in 98 with no plans for reconstruction, then BC recurred in the left on 06, THIS time she decided to reconstruct. The right side rejected everything and was finally removed. The plastic surgeon used her own tissue to build a breast almost the exact size as the one that "took"! Amazing things can be done with the right surgeon. have you considered seeing more than one for a 2nd opinion?

Thanks for your info. Did your Mom have a Flap surgery the second time. Where did they take her tissue from.

Thank you to the 3 who replied to me. I am calmer than when I wrote the above. I know that I have to settle in for a long period of time till the end result is known. The right breast which is cooperating is full on the top but not yet filled in (saline solution) on the bottom. The left one which had the cancer is now just healing from undoing the process. It's so lumpy now. If I decide to not try further with reconstruction on that breast is there surgery to flatten it out so it looks better? I just seem so involved with this and not much else, except for reading novels which is such a wonderful escape for me. Is there anyone out there for who it took a long time to get to the end result and were you ok with that end result?

had radiation with first diagnosis, after second time had both breasts removed, with expander reconsruction. due to the damaged skin from radiation the whole thing was described to me as a risk. it took but the radiated skin was too thinned out to do nipples, the rest was ok. it's dissapointing for you, am sorry. i know what you mean, they make radiation seem like a walk in the park, of course we now know better

Ev,
The waiting is the hardest part (thanks, Tom Petty) I too am waiting for my "reconstruction" to begin-I feel like a robot saying that word.
I guess in our business we must learn patience, and I am not a patient person by any means, but I guess there is nothing we can do, but wait.
Just take heart in knowing you get to live!
Hang tough!
Peace,
Trish

I have read rejection stories like yours before. I am going through reconstruction, 8 weeks post op from double mast. (You can read my journal or past posts for my story) Be patient and put the anger aside...you can't change things. I am surprised that after the second time, your doc didn't recommend mast then. If you aren't healing right, you must be patient until ready. You don't want more health issues because of that.
YOU ARE ALIVE>>>>CANCER OUT>>>> That is what is important. Boobs are superficial...find peace with the waiting period. You'll get there.
You didn't state really what kind of problems you were having...it may not have anything to do with radiation. You might want to re-post a bit more complete of what your problems are.
Good luck and you will be in my prayers.
