The effects of soy products on breast cancer

by Gail J. S. on 6/29/2007 at 10:36 pmin category Survivors
I am a 53 year old post menopausal two time survivor of breast cancer. My first occurance was at 30 years of age. I had a modified radical mastectomy of the left breast-no chemo, no radiation, no positive lymph nodes. Twenty-three years later-last year, Jan. 2006, after a regular mammogram, a suspicious area warranted an ultra sound and then biopsy. It was malignant and I received a lumpectomy. Although the tumor was under 1cm, I chose to have chemo and radiation, because it was Herr2 positive(a fast growing high reoccurance rate). It has been a little over a year, cancer free YEA!!! I was wondering if any of you have heard of a link between, soy products and breast cancer? Thanks for any input on the matter.
Gail

I asked my oncologist this very question. He said soy in moderation is ok but to much soy has been linked to breast cancer. I was taking mega soy for my hot flashes and night sweats and it really did help alot. I was diag. with Breast cancer Sept 28, 2006 But I am 48 years old and I had a bilateral mastectomy, chemo and radiation. I do want to go for reconstruction. I take tamaxafin as a cancer preventitive. But I will not take the soy. I have decided to suffer through the hot flashes and the night sweats

Yes I have heard of this link. My cousin in law (also a survivor) mentioned that she quit eating soy because it can stimulate estrogen production and her cancer is estrogen positive (so is mine). I have only ever eaten soy nuts but I won't be doing that anymore. Oddly enough I went to have my haircut yesterday and that was the first question my hair dresser asked me. He said that soy is bad for all cancer patients not just breast. That's all I know. I'd say skip it.

I generally try to avoid soy products because of the estrogen-like substance in soy. Some doctors warn against soy, others don't think there is any reason to avoid it. Some even say it helps protect against breast cancer. My breast cancer was ER+ as well as HER2/neu positive, so I have decided to stay away from soy.
