Joint pain and hand aches

by Gail J. S. on 4/4/2008 at 11:16 pmin category Survivors
I had a modified radical mastectomy in 1984 when I was 30 years old. Did not have chemo or radiation. Since then I have had a hysterectomy. Two years ago, after a routine mammogram on the right breast, I was diagnosed with breast cancer again. I was so shocked after being cancer free for almost 22 years. This time I had a lumpectomy. Because it was Herr2 positive, I received chemo and radiation. So far so good. I have had 2 years being cancer free again! YEA!!! My question to anyone is this: I was on Femara for the first year after radiation, but the body aches were so severe that my oncologist switched me to Aromasin. I have less overall aches except in my hips and also my hands. Sometimes I wake up and my hands hurt so much. There is sometimes pain in all my finger joints. I go back to my oncologists in June. Does anyone else have any experience with these drugs? I dread to think of it getting worse in 3 more years, but I know I have to take it for five years.
Thanks for any help.
Gail

Gail, I have the same pain (including the waking me up part - though so many things wake me up incl. night sweats and neuropathy). I've been on Tamoxifen for 10 weeks and the onc. is not sure if it's the chemo still in my system or the pills. Have to "wait and see" - something I am not good at even after everything I've gone through. Advil & Tylenol don't help the pain. Aleve SOMETIMES does, Darvocet SOMETIMES does. Half a Percocet does, but it knocks me out so can't be on that while I am working. Congrats on beating the beast twice, Gail. All the best to you. Love and support to all!

Correction: I inadverdantly said the drug was Arimedex on my comment to Jeanette, it is Aromasin. Sorry about that. Gail Smith

Dear Jeanette,
Thanks for your comment. It seems that it wasn't until a year and half or so that it starting really being achy. Honestly, I think the Arimedex is as bad as the Femara. I am going back to talk to my oncologist in June after my blood work etc. I'm not sure which is the better drug as far as reoccurence. I may go back to the femara if it is better. I hope your body will be able to tolerate it better. I'm sure the extra weight I have gained since chemo, doesn't help. God bless and I pray you also have a wonderful 2008!

Hi Gail.....so sorry you had to go through this again! Thank God you are cancer free now!! I have been on Femara for about three weeks now. I was wondering how long before you started having body aches? I'm hoping my body will be able to handle it after all I've been through this past year....HOPING AND PRAYING FOR A WONDERFUL 2008!!!! Take Care!
