Second Opinions

by Jackie T on 2/10/2008 at 10:24 amin category Treatment
I have been newly diagnosed with a 1.6 cm tumor (most removed from biopsy) in my left breast, pathology report states: Sections of the entirely submitted left areolar mass depict features of an invasive ductal adenocarcinoma w/o associated ductal carcinoma in situ. My cancer surgeon, whom I like and trust very much recommends a lumpectomy with removal of the nipple, and a sentinel node biopsy with breast reconstruction. After surgery I will know what stage. I am also meeting with my oncologist before surgery. How important are second opinions and does it delay your plans for surgery? I want to get this process started and do not want to prolong my surgery and treatment.

If you like and trust your doctor go ahead and have the surgery, the sooner the better. Once it's out of you and they do the lympth node dissection, then you will know what you're dealing with and can look at options for the chemo and other treatments to make sure it doesn't come back. Best of luck to you.
