Breast Reconstruction - T-Flap (abdomen) vs. Skin Expander and Implants

by Jackie T on 3/20/2008 at 11:34 pmin category Treatment
I have early stage breast cancer in the left breast and lymph nodes are negative. However, I have tested positive for the BRCA2 cancer mutation gene. My Care Team has recommended six treatments of chemo in three week intervals and then a bi-lateral mastectomy with breast reconstruction, later I will have my ovaries and fallopian tubes removed.

I have met with my plastic surgeon and she advised I was a good candidate for the T-Flap using the abdomen tissue and or the Skin expander with implants. I prefer to use my own tissue and leaning towards the T-Flap even though it is an extensive surgery and bulging can occur in the abdomen.

I would like to have some feedback from anyone who has experienced these procedures.

Thank you!

Hi Jackie,
I had a bilater mastectomy with tram flap reconstruction. I have to say that having the tram flap was the worse thing i ever did. I had complications with wound healing and ended up having a nonhealing wound across my entire abdomen and on the breasts that were formed. I have had 2 additional surgeries since then and am still battling bad pain in my abdomen. I am also still (after almost 2 years) trying to strengthen my body enough to function without the abdominal muscles. I would advise that you speak to others who have had this surgery before you decide.

Hi Jackie,

I was diagnosed with IDC in June 2007. I underwent a mastectomy with immediate tissue expander placement. I had my exchange surgery in December. I have been totally happy with my implant so far.

I, too, struggled with the decision on what to do. I asked my plastic surgeon for a list of names of women who had both procedures. And I contacted each one of them. I suggest that you do the same. These women were great so speak with and I learned a lot from them.

Good luck to you in whatever decision you make. As long as you make an informed decision, you will be happy with what you decide.
