I had my first mammogram two years ago in December (I'm 44). The results showed some cysts, lymph nodes and a growth that was probably benign. But, the radiologist recommended follow up with an ultrasound. Same results, probably benign. I was to follow up in six months with another ultrasound. Which I didn't do, I'm one of the world's great procrastinators. I finally had the ultrasound in May 2007. The results were slightly different. More lymph nodes (inflamed (?) than the first and more cysts and a new growth that is irregular in shape around the edges. My primary insisted on a mammogram as a mammogram shows more than an ultrasound. Same results, now I'm supposed to follow up in three months (same tests, mammogram/ultrasound) instead of every six months, as they want to watch this. Is this something I should worry about? Has anyone experienced anything similar?

June of 2007 at my yearly mammogram they descovered that this cyst was cancer. I had my surgery the beginning of August and just had my 1st round of chemo today. My prognoses looks good. 1st stage, nodes were enlarged but not effected, (they removed the 2 enlarged). In size the tumor was 1.6 cm. Anything below 1 they do not recommend chemo. My Oncologist is using words like cure instead of prolong.
Well my point is, I wish I would have taken measures to follow up on this before my yearly mammogram rolled around. I wanted to hear what that doctor had to say, and when I did, I just put it behind me. I knew there was something there that shouldn't be. I should have had the lump removed then. I would not have to deal with chemo and radiation now.
Please insist on a different test than the mammogram. According to my doc, there are 15 different types of breast cancer and 1 kind doesn't even show on a mammogram. Biopsy's aren't fun but it will give them the tissue that they need to see what is going on. If it is negative, which I pray for you that it is, have it removed. In my case it would have worked.

I wish you the best of luck, please don't let this go and keep us updated.
I wanted to add that I am 40yrs old and have had fibroid cysts in both breast since I was 14yrs old, however they tell me the cyst aren't not what turned into cancer!!!I agree with the others!!! I would want more done. I was a nursing mom to a newborn when I noticed a lump under my arm while showering. I was told on 3 occasions that it was probably just due to nursing, nothing felt abnormal. During these 3 visits my breast had become hard and I wasn't producing nearly the milk I was from the (left) good side. Again I was told probably due to nursing. I decided a month later to see a surgeon on my own. I had an ultasound 2 days prior to seeing the surgeon. The radiologist said no red flags for cancer it looks ok. As soon as the surgeon took a look at my breast she was sure it was cancer. I had a biopsy within a hour and was in an oncologist office the very next morning. Needless to say I was postive for cancer. I just finished chemo yesterday and responded very well. Next step is surgery. I don't want to scare you but you have to be persistant. It definetly worked in my favor to take matters into my own hands. I wish you the best of luck, please don't let this go and keep us updated.
