The term survivor?

by LSNoe on 11/12/2007 at 10:14 pmin category Survivors
Does anyone else feel a bit nervous about using the term survivor? It is like, if I say the word survivor out loud, it might jinx my future and the cancer will return. I know it is silly, but I have difficulty with the term survivor given that so many times the cancer returns. My personal statistic is that I have a 72% chance of being cancer free in 10 years. How do you deal with the odds and the term survivor?

I so feel the same way I was diagnosed in Dec masectomy surgery in Jan 08 and by Feb my Oncologist said I was cancer free and didnt need any further treatment because the area as so small and no lymph node involved also genetic testing came back all negative they felt dont need any further treatment other than close monitoring so with all this great news I feel do I use this term because i havent had to go through what alot of other people have had to go through when they are diagnosed with this horrible disease!!!

LSNoe, I too have a problem with the word "survivor". You said exactly the way I feel too-when my reconstruction doc said "it" I just about burst into tears!
I thought I was a kook, thank you!

I got on this because I am confused. I had a double mastectomy and by huge blessings, it all came back non malignant. My doctors are amazed, shocked, surprised.... needless to say, so am I. But my ex -- soom to be, says I never had breast cancer. Ya, he's a jerk...but beside the point... he's in the past. But, is he right, or still trying to be mean to me. Everyone tells me that I'm a lucky one, yet HE tells another story. I have 3 grown daughters and I feel so strongly about early detection.

I was a survivor from the day I was diagnosed. I won't EVEN consider the alternative.... :)

It's a hard trip whatever we call it, find a word that fits you.

I personally dont like using that word either, however, it seems to be the word chosen by the many. My oncologist says I am on *watch* for 5 years. I dont like the word *journey* either because to me that would be something fun. I call it an experience.

I was just feelig the same way after seeing all these different statistics. I haven't even begun my journey still waiting for surgery date to remove right breast but I can't let these odds keep me from my kids future - so call me a fighter or survivor but I will be ALIVE!! Just wanted to say that I totally feel you - try to find different meanings - those that will lift your spirits.

The word survivor is one I always used .. from the beginning I'm a fighter and I will always be a survivor .. We will all survive .. This cancer can Kiss my Butt .. Let's all beat the odds together .. If God brings us there .. he will see us through .. Have faith sister .. My treatments aren't finished yet .. but, I'm almost there 3 more to go and it will be 1yr of treatment .. I refuse to be jinxed .. Be positive .. you are a survivor
