Denial by Insurance Company for OncoDx Assay

by Marti on 6/2/2008 at 2:29 pmin category Tell Your Story
I need to vent today. I had the OncoDx test done as recommended by my oncologist so that I did not have to have chemotherapy if it was not necessary. My tumor size was right over the limit where without this test, I would have received chemotherapy. My score was low and I do not need chemotherapy.
Genomic Health, the company that performs the test is contracted with my insurance. I saw they were In network and went ahead with the test as I need
no pre-authorization for out patient testing. The testing is done on tumor tissue from your breast surgery. Evidently Genomic Health perform other tests too because my insurance, Medica, a company out of Minnesota denied payment (charge $3,650.00) stating the test is experimental and unproven and therefore no benefits are payable on this expense. I called Genomic Health and they are going to handle the Insurance appeal. They were super nice and will work out
payment plans if the appeals fail. I also called the Cancer Center where I get treatment. The Breast Cancer coordinator said I was the first woman there that she knows was denied payment by her insurance for this test. She said the test is FDA approved and included in recommendations of The National Cancer Institute guidelines of all the major Cancer Centers. Up to this point, my coverage has been good once I met my $ 3000.00 deductible which I did. If this is not covered, I am really upset!!!! My husband says the test was worth it
no matter and not to worry. I know he is right but I feel so many emotions right on edge that I never had before. Thanks For letting me vent!!!! I am still so fortunate, I AM A CANCER SURVIVOR!!!!

Dear Marti, You may want to contact your States, Attorney Generals office if your ins.co wont pay. Im not sure if they get involved with medical stuff, but I've contacted them a few times in the past for help with consumer issues, and have found them to be most helpful & always get results. It seems they are a source to be reckoned with. Good Luck & a hundred more years of survivorship. Pat otherwise known as Wandas friend.

Marti....hey it's me again....I am in the same boat......My insurance also denied my test, but like you say Genomic Health is appealing (you are right, they are really kind). I was not given a choice in the test. My onco just did it without my knowledge.....but if I had been given a choice I would have done it anyway. I think the test is worth it. What I told my insurance company is.....if I had not had the test done, they would be paying out for my chemo (which I also do not have to take) and other med bills that probably would have come from the treatment.....so in the long run...the test is alot cheaper on the ins. co than the treatment that you would have gotten if the test had not been done.... LIKE WE NEED SOMETHING ELSE TO WORRY ABOUT.....It will handle itself.....hand in there..........bj
