There is a video located here http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=3430787 of her announcement. It is very moving to hear her talk about her diagnosis and how early detection saved her life. There is also an article about it, http://abcnews.go.com/Health/CancerPreventionAndTreatment/Story?id=3433224&page=1.

Roberts explains that her cancer was not detected in her mammogram, but was detected in a sonogram. She believes it is very important for women to get both of these tests in order to avoid misdiagnoses.

I hope that by Roberts speaking out about her diagnosis, she will inspire more women to get their yearly mammograms and perform their at home breast exams.

What Is Breast Cancer?

Breast Cancer is caused by cells that start to grow rapidly and invade nearby tissues. When large collections of these tissue gather, they are called tumors, but not all tumors can spread and are therefore not considered cancerous.
Breast cancer tissues usually come from the ducts or glands, but any types of tissue in the breast can form cancer. It is the most common malignancy affecting women in North American and Europe and every woman is at risk. Even if you do not have a family history of breast cancer, you are still at risk. So it is incredibly important to screen for tumors with mammograms, especially since it can take months to years for a tumor to get large enough to feel in the breast.
