Hoping someone can help me...I have a turned muscle or something under my arm that is very painful. It is so tight, even when I stretch...it doesn't want to move and feels like a knife is cutting me. I do stretch excercises, but nothing works. Docs are thinking my muscle was cut or turned during surgery and not much can be done right now. Anyone else experience this and if so, what did you do? I am feeling desperate because though I am uncomfortable with the expanders...this is the only pain I am having now.
Thanks.
Laura

I had a left breast mastectomy and 44 lymph nodes removed, 18 were affected.
I have been thru 5 surgeries, including a hysterectomy 4 weeks ago. However, what is driving me crazy, after one year of chemo and surgeries (lumpectomy, mastectomy, etc) is this same pain that you talk about. I have researched it a lot, and also my oncologist, who is the greatest has helped me with medication. What it is is neuropathy after mastectomy and it is more common than you think. The treatment is NEURONTIN (Also known as GABAPENTIN as generic). In any case, I have been on it for almost a year. It is a chronic pain, and may take a very long time. However, I am researching it more and more, and trying different things. One thing is capzasin. (over the counter). I have also been advised by my oncologist to try acupuncture. (I haven't gone that route yet, but may try it). However, I am glad to be able to tell you that I only have to deal with it for one to two hours per day, from one dosage to another of the Neurontin. The rest of the day it goes away for the most part. I do feel like there is a "turned muscle" to use your words which very acurately describe it.
I will try to keep you posted if I can on what I find and any other info I can get you.
Good luck!!

JulieHi Laura my name is Julie. Auguts 29, 2007 I had a partial mastectomy and still when i reach back or lean far I feel pulling since there is no muscle there anymore. It used to hurt maybe as it was still healing. I've been trying to work on it lately stretching and when power walking i"m moving my arms alot to increase motion. Some women even get some form of therapy post-surgery maybe look into something like that. Good luck. Julie
Good luck
SarahIt took a while for the pain and stiffness to go away. Hang in there. It gets better. Excercise helped a lot and helped me with range of motion. Good luck Sarah
