Anyone have Underarm Muscle Pain after Mastectomy

by wannabestrong on 4/14/2008 at 1:00 pmin category Tell Your Story
Hoping someone can help me...I have a turned muscle or something under my arm that is very painful. It is so tight, even when I stretch...it doesn't want to move and feels like a knife is cutting me. I do stretch excercises, but nothing works. Docs are thinking my muscle was cut or turned during surgery and not much can be done right now. Anyone else experience this and if so, what did you do? I am feeling desperate because though I am uncomfortable with the expanders...this is the only pain I am having now.
Thanks.
Laura

Thanks for your comment. I am seeing a specialist tomorrow. My surgeon says he doesn't know what it is, but my primary doctor described it as you. Hopefully I will find some relief. thanks for the comment and I will keep you all posted.

Hi there !
I had a left breast mastectomy and 44 lymph nodes removed, 18 were affected.
I have been thru 5 surgeries, including a hysterectomy 4 weeks ago. However, what is driving me crazy, after one year of chemo and surgeries (lumpectomy, mastectomy, etc) is this same pain that you talk about. I have researched it a lot, and also my oncologist, who is the greatest has helped me with medication. What it is is neuropathy after mastectomy and it is more common than you think. The treatment is NEURONTIN (Also known as GABAPENTIN as generic). In any case, I have been on it for almost a year. It is a chronic pain, and may take a very long time. However, I am researching it more and more, and trying different things. One thing is capzasin. (over the counter). I have also been advised by my oncologist to try acupuncture. (I haven't gone that route yet, but may try it). However, I am glad to be able to tell you that I only have to deal with it for one to two hours per day, from one dosage to another of the Neurontin. The rest of the day it goes away for the most part. I do feel like there is a "turned muscle" to use your words which very acurately describe it.
I will try to keep you posted if I can on what I find and any other info I can get you.
Good luck!!
Oh, and keep doing the excercises, dont stop or you can lose your mobility!! Keep the faith !

Well, The doc looked at me like I was an alien and couldn't say anything. I questioned if something went wrong at the surgery...he didn't answer and said, "i'm going to send you to a ortho-neuro specialist." I think they botched my surgery and cut a nerve line or tendun. He said that I possibly will be handicapped forever....it is upsetting and I will see a specialist next wednesday and will keep you all informed. It is upsetting....!!!!

I am going to my surgeon tomorrow...At the last 2 visits, he said, "Lets watch it." I can't stand it. If I move in any certain direction, the pain is so intense I almost faint. It is certainly a cut in the muscle or the muscle is pulled too tight. You can actually see the difference in one underarm vs. the other. It has a wrinkle to it that is tight like a tenden or something. I get now answers regarding this...I am afraid that something was botched during my surgery. If it wasn't for this pain...I would be pain free from my mastectomy (And you know how hard that is to say) I am just wearing thin with the pain thing...It is 2 months now and I am back to work, but this arm thing is wearing me thin. Thanks for your support and your answers...I will keep you posted.

Hi Laura my name is Julie. Auguts 29, 2007 I had a partial mastectomy and still when i reach back or lean far I feel pulling since there is no muscle there anymore. It used to hurt maybe as it was still healing. I've been trying to work on it lately stretching and when power walking i"m moving my arms alot to increase motion. Some women even get some form of therapy post-surgery maybe look into something like that. Good luck.

Laura, I also have the same feeling as you. My surgery was 2 months ago and I feel like something is just "not quite right". I, like you, feel a tightening feeling (mostly at night....it even wakes me). My surgeon also just says it will get better over time. Let me know if you find out anything differant. I am very active and tolorate pain very well, but this is extremely annoying. I haven't thought about the muscle damage thing, but that would make sense. I just felt maybe it was scar tissue or something. bj

Whats strange is the side that had the nodes removed is fine..this side, simple mast, but it feels as though the muscle is pull so tight it buckled. You can actually see it. I am stretching and everything...it seems to be getting worse and my doctors aren't saying much. I am afraid the muscle could have been damaged during surgery. I am frightened about this a bit....I can't escape the pain and feel so handicapped because of this. Thanks for all you support.

It took a while for the pain and stiffness to go away. Hang in there. It gets better. Excercise helped a lot and helped me with range of motion.

Good luck
