I need to hear from other women who are in similar situation. I could not find any information on mortality rates for women diagnosed with a second cancerous tumor years later after the first diagnosis.
I was diagnosed with stage 1 invasive ductal carcinoma in 1994 and underwent lumpectomy, radiation and chemotherapy. This past July a new tumor was detected in the opposite breast, biopsy indicates a low grade and 0.5 CM tumor. Two days ago I had another lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy (no lympho node involvement). I was sent home immediately after given pain medication. I've been up and about my day to day activities with ease. My surgeon says that she'll be very surprised if further treatment should be necessary. I am awaiting my pathology report.

I am in the the same shoes, i was first diagnosed on the left side in 2000, had a lumpectomy with node removal, chemo and radiation and then in March of this year (2007) was diagnosed with it in the right breast. I am 2 chemo treatments away from done with that and going in tomorrow (9/5) to start the radiation part. I had the genetic testing done since I am at such a high risk and have a family history too and just as we thought I am BRCA1 possitive so I will be watched very aggresively and am having a hysterectomy after all of the chemo and radiation is done. It may be in your best interest to talk to your docs and see if the testing is a good idea for you. My future is full of biyearly mri's and ultra sounds but the good news is no more mamos for me!
any time you want to talk contact me!
love and prayers to you and all
