Life after a second diagnosis of cancer

by Yvonne on 9/3/2007 at 8:31 pmin category Survivors
I need to hear from other women who are in similar situation. I could not find any information on mortality rates for women diagnosed with a second cancerous tumor years later after the first diagnosis.

I was diagnosed with stage 1 invasive ductal carcinoma in 1994 and underwent lumpectomy, radiation and chemotherapy. This past July a new tumor was detected in the opposite breast, biopsy indicates a low grade and 0.5 CM tumor. Two days ago I had another lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy (no lympho node involvement). I was sent home immediately after given pain medication. I've been up and about my day to day activities with ease. My surgeon says that she'll be very surprised if further treatment should be necessary. I am awaiting my pathology report.

Yvonne; I was diagnosed 5 yrs ago w/BC and i also had a lumpectomy, chemo, radiation. it was stage 2. 4 yrs to the day I was diagnosed w/bc again in the same breast but this time it was her-2 stage 3b. i again underwent surgery (mastectomy) chemo and radiation again. it has been a struggle but I rely on my inner strength and stubborness to keep on going. I go to my onocolgolist today for my checkup. when they did the mastectomy they took out 21 lymph nodes and 17 were cancerous. It gets you down but life gets you back up on your feet again. you are in my prayers and thoughts, if you need to talk I am here.

I'm new to this online community. I do not have breast cancer by the grace of the almighty, but I do wish to read other people's stories and to give my support to everyone. May God bless you all and your families. You Will Survive! Please be positive... you must speak it and believe! : )

P.S. check out www.dailyom.com for some very good day to day inspirational articles and check out my Survivor Breast Cancer merchandise on my online Zazzle shop: www.zazzle.com/marquitalenear*

Hi Yvonne, I am a 15 year survivor with 2 occurences in the L breast, after masectomy on the Left side - I got the genetic testing and elected to have the R side mastectomy and my ovaries removed, I still worry everyday about the cancer coming back somewhere - my thoughts are with you.
Take care

Thank you, Nancy, for your support. I feel better already. I wonder whether there is a support group for patients and survivors of bilateral breast cancer.

I am in the the same shoes, i was first diagnosed on the left side in 2000, had a lumpectomy with node removal, chemo and radiation and then in March of this year (2007) was diagnosed with it in the right breast. I am 2 chemo treatments away from done with that and going in tomorrow (9/5) to start the radiation part. I had the genetic testing done since I am at such a high risk and have a family history too and just as we thought I am BRCA1 possitive so I will be watched very aggresively and am having a hysterectomy after all of the chemo and radiation is done. It may be in your best interest to talk to your docs and see if the testing is a good idea for you. My future is full of biyearly mri's and ultra sounds but the good news is no more mamos for me!
any time you want to talk contact me!
love and prayers to you and all
