In 2019, with transformational support from Dwight and Martha Schar, Inova Schar Cancer, a department of Inova Fairfax Hospital, unveiled a state-of-the-art 430,000-square foot facility as the flagship for the systemwide cancer program. Inova Schar Cancer provides leading-edge cancer care to the region, bringing hope and healing to each patient, while giving unmatched clinical, emotional and practical support. The Inova team includes nationally renowned physicians, medical oncologists, hematologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, with specialized expertise in different types of cancer. They work alongside genetic counselors, nurses, dietitians and clinical therapists to form a collaborative, multi-modal care team. Their work is grounded in the latest advances in prevention, treatment, clinical trials and research.
Within Inova Schar Cancer, the Inova Saville Cancer Screening and Prevention Center serves as a medical home for prevention and early detection – one of a small number of comprehensive cancer prevention centers in the United States. Through personal consultations, education and community outreach, research, and screening and prevention services, the expert team at Inova Saville Center helps patients better understand their risks and decrease their chances of developing cancer. The Inova Saville Center‚ community outreach and education program, benefitted from early investment from National Breast Cancer Foundation, and thanks to this critical philanthropic support, the team was able to demonstrate the overwhelming need for a mobile screening program. In January 2025, Inova launched its mobile screening program with a state-of-the-art bus, bringing vital cancer screenings directly to the underserved communities. Patients can access free cancer and cardiac health screenings, enroll in clinical trials, obtain genetic assessments and referrals, and access trusted prevention education. To help overcome barriers that impede people from seeking preventative care, Inova partners with community organizations for dedicated screening events, providing life-saving resources where they’re needed most.
“We are thrilled to continue partnering with National Breast Cancer Foundation, who has supported our free community screening program for underserved patients since 2023. Thanks to the generosity and partnership of supporters like National Breast Cancer Foundation, we launched our Inova Mobile Screening bus in January 2025 to expand our community outreach program and ensure everyone in our community has access to life-saving screening and prevention services regardless of their financial status.” — Liz Stark, Manager of Community Outreach and Education, Saville Cancer Screening and Prevention Center
