American-Italian Cancer Foundation Mobile, no-cost Breast Cancer Screening Program
The American-Italian Cancer Foundation's (AICF) Mobile Mammography Program is open to economically disadvantaged and medically underserved women age 40 and over who have not had a mammogram in the last 12 months. The large mobile clinic travels to neighborhoods throughout New York City to provide mammograms, clinical breast exams, instruction in breast self-exam, and educational information. To encourage participation, AICF offers incentives to women who take part in screening events. Beauty grab bags and gift cards are frequently distributed, and if weather permits, AICF volunteers literally roll out the red carpet to create a welcoming and celebratory atmosphere. AICF has provided screening services to over 75,000 women since its founding in 1987.
"The American-Italian Cancer Foundation's mobile, no-cost Breast Cancer Screening Program fills a critical gap in patient access by recruiting women from New York City neighborhoods with high poverty rates, low breast cancer screening rates, and high incidences of breast cancer. These women are fearful, ambivalent, or distrustful of the health care system and are not being reached through other screening programs. We gain their trust through our community-based, grassroots approach."
