How often should I go to my doctor for a check-up?
Women should receive several health screenings to stay healthy and be proactive about their health. Regular check-ups and physicals can help you stay up to date on recommended preventative care and discuss any changes or concerns with your healthcare provider.
Adult women ages 18 and over are encouraged to receive a well-woman exam that includes a clinical breast exam and pelvic exam once a year. However, if any unusual symptoms or changes in your breasts occur before your scheduled visit, do not hesitate to contact your doctor, who may recommend testing be done to determine the cause of the change or concern.
In addition to an annual well-woman exam, women ages 40 and over at average risk for breast cancer should receive an annual screening mammogram as part of early detection. If you are at a higher-than-average risk for breast cancer, you may need to start mammograms before the age of 40 or have different types of screening more often. Talk with your doctor about the screening schedule that is recommended for you.
