What is breast self-awareness?
Breast self-awareness means knowing how your breasts normally look and feel so you can recognize changes and share any concerns with your healthcare provider. One way to become breast self-aware is by performing a monthly breast self-exam to familiarize yourself with your “normal” and look for any changes.
Changes to look or feel for may include a new lump or thickening, a change in breast size or shape, skin changes such as dimpling or redness, nipple changes or discharge, or a change that persists over time.
If you notice a new or unusual change, contact your healthcare provider for evaluation. Most breast changes are not cancer, but getting a change checked can help identify breast cancer early when it is most treatable.
Breast self-awareness is one part of taking care of your breast health. It does not replace recommended mammograms or other breast cancer screening based on your age, personal risk, and health history.
