Is hair dye linked to a higher risk of breast cancer?
Researchers have studied the possible link between hair products and breast cancer for many years, but results have been mixed. A 2019 study found that women who regularly used permanent hair dye or chemical hair straighteners had a higher risk of developing breast cancer. Women who used chemical hair straighteners at least every five to eight weeks had about a 30% higher risk.
However, the study found an association, not proof, that these products cause breast cancer. More research is needed to understand the potential risks of hair dyes and straighteners. Because breast cancer risk is influenced by many factors, talk with your healthcare provider about your individual risk and concerns.
